What is a sonic toothbrush anyway? And how is it different from an electric toothbrush? This may be slightly confusing to some. A sonic toothbrush is an electric toothbrush and it is powered by rechargeable batteries. However, a sonic toothbrush is an electric toothbrush on steroids. While the best electric toothbrush may give you 3500 to 8000 brush strokes every minute, the best sonic toothbrush promises at least 20,000 brush strokes a minute.
For example, the Cybersonic toothbrush claims to be the fastest sonic toothbrush in the world and it offers 45,000 brush strokes per minute. Also known as a ultrasonic toothbrush, these high speed electric toothbrushes are designed to move at incredible speeds, thereby allowing the vibration to remove plague and dirt easily.
The speed of a sonic toothbrush increases the flow of saliva in the mouth and creates tiny air bubbles that can help to clean between the teeth, so the sonic toothbrush doesn’t just clean using the bristles, it massages the fluids in your mouth and uses it to clean your teeth and gums.
Sonic toothbrushes are considerably more expensive than normal electric toothbrushes and manual toothbrushes but they come with a great deal of special features as well. Many offer different modes like deep cleaning, whitening or flossing. They also provide timers so that you can avoid over brushing. Many of them are designed to last for a long time and can work extremely well for you if you’re looking for a thorough teeth cleaning everyday.
So what’s the best sonic toothbrush? I’ve tried quite a few of them and many of them seem to be equally matched. However, if I really had to start all over again and just choose one, I would pick the Philips Sonicare FlexCare Plus Rechargeable Toothbrush.
This particular toothbrush really stands out from the rest and it has a great collection of features while being ergonomically designed to easily usable. It’s a fantastic sonic toothbrush. While its a bit expensive (over $100), its worth every single cent because the one I’ve had still works and I’ve had it for quite a while.
Alternatively, a cheaper sonic toothbrush (under $50) that’s still pretty good is the Philips Sonicare Essence HX 5351/46 Power Toothbrush, although I think this particular budget model pales in comparison to the Philips Sonicare FlexCare Plus. But it does work, although I wish it was designed better and had a UV sanitizer built-in (like the FlexCare Plus).
There are other sonic toothbrushes out there but trust me, if you only want the best sonic toothbrush, you can’t go wrong with the Philips Sonicare series. I’ve tried so many different sonic toothbrushes over the years and still gone back to my trusty Philips Sonicare FlexCare Plus because of how well it works for me.
